Titillating titles
Please be aware how important a title is–in a query, a proposal, on the manuscript itself. If you are quering an editor about your trip to Panama, give it a title in the query. Yes, You may change it later or (and this happens more than 50% of the time) the editor will change it. But a title tells the editor that you have skill in introducing your subject.
My article, "Save The Last Drop–You Paid For It" sold four times for prices ranging from $50 to $500. Each article was different, geared to the audience of the particular publication.
"Tight Sqeeze" might title your piece about sailing through the Panama canal. in a cruise ship. It is tight! The huge ship has no more than a couple of feet clearance on either side. God forbid you title your summer adventure, "My Trip To The Grand Canyon." Your query or article will return to you as fast as cyberspace (or the Pony Express) can bring it. "Over the Edge" might gain the editor's attention long enough to read the description of your experience.
Have I failed to mention in this adventure into Blogdom that I welcome comments, questions, response of any kind? Happy to meet you through your words. Closing on Jan. 30, 2008, Willma Gore
