Throw-away words

This is to urge you to check your manuscripts for the too frequent use of "ther are," "there was," "there were"  When we write "There were many cows on the field…." why not say, "Many cows were in the field…" You can almost  always eliminate the "there-were" construction.  But better yet, "Many cows grazed in the field…" Try alwasy to use more active verbs than the forms of to be.  This brings us also the the use of passive voice–another form to throw away–most of the time. Examples: "They were walking" is much stronger if you write "They walked…"  "The are sitting…" is better if rendered "They sit…"   or, if in the past, "They sat…"  In workshop I frequesntly ask members to use a red pen and circile every use of "ther are, was, were" and every "-ing word."  Not all can be eliminated, but it is vital to your writing skills to watch for them and re-phrase.

If you disagree,  with anything I say, I want to hear from you.  If you have a question or suggestion, please make it.  I have more than 60 years writing (and selling) experience.  this does not mean I know it all–but am happy to share what I do know.  Willma Gore
