Markets
My last Blog closed with "Until tomorrow." That was a false statement because I don't blog on weekends. So this is the "tomorrow," a Monday, President's Day, a holiday for some, but not for this writer . And, I recently learned that some major publication's editors even work on weekends sometimes. At least I received a nice "thank you" last Sunday from a major journal's editor.
In titling this day's Blog "Markets," it is to stress the increasing opportunities offered by Anthology publishers. Chicken Soup For the Soul has recenly put out a call for essays from mothers featurng the inventive or humorous activities of their sons when the kids were no older than 8 years, "Little Heroes." This immediately stirred my memory of a very humorous incident with my middle son, many years ago. Another call from the Chick Soup People is for love stories–to be compiled in an anthology that will be released next (2010) Valentine's Day. Search for their needs at www.chickensoupforthesoul,com. Yes, it takes a long time to hear from your submission but, in the mean time, you can try marketing it elsewhere. If it sells elsewhere and Chick Soup finally decides they want it, depending on where it is first published, they may take it anyway. Pay is about $200 per essay and you receive copies of the book in which your essay appears.
The Cup of Comfort Series is another anthology that seeks all manner of essays. Contact "Cupa" for their current needs. www.cupofcomfort.com . Another opportunity for earning money from your writing can be found in the annual contest pages in the back of the Writer's Market.
I'll cite more details about the needs of Anthology publishers in the next Blog. Happy writing, Willma
