Finding The Right Word

I believe that in a flurry of other commitments I failed to blog on Friday, but here I am on Monday with a few  words about a word that became very important to me by the end of last week.

Following a "call" for writing about True Love (found, lost, happy, regreted) for a Chicken Soup For The Soul Anthology to be published in time for Valentine's Day 2010, I wrote and revised and wrote some more.  My computer file title was "Loved, Lost."  I knew I needed another "L" word to complete that title. (Languished, Laboratory, Lamentable,  Largess? paraded through my brain but nothing really fit. Mine is a light touch essay.

Beside my desk and worn almost to its demise is a little book, Look It Up, by Rudolph Flesch.  It has  been my "right arm" in writing over these past years.  It was first published in 1911 making the original even older than I,. Apparently in the early 90s (I don't recall) is when I purchased this copy.  It has no definitions but lists all the common words we use and their proper spellings.  Also distinguishes between "insure" and "ensure" and other words we often mis-use..

Unable to mine the "L" vocabulary in my head, I opened Look It Up to the "L" section.  Within a couple of minutes I had found my word, so common I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it.  Result, my essay went out to Chick Soup under the title, "Loved, Lost & Laughed."

Deadline for submissions is May 31.(600-1200 words); If your story is chosen, your reward is $200 and 10 free copies of the anthology.  Submissions go to: http://chickensoupforthesoul.com/form.asp?cid=submit_story
