Editing
Occasionally I am asked by members of my workshops to do some editing for them. I like to offer as much "editing" help as possible during the workshop sessions, but some members want more than time allows in the workshops. They send me manuscripts via e-mail. I do not edit on screen. I print these and edit by pen. If lots of work is needed, I re-type the manuscripts and charge accordingly. (I am not seeking jobs with this Blog!!–simply offering a few suggestions that may be of use to all.) The latest editing job is for a member who has excellent, saleable ideas. However, she takes too many words on the page to present those ideas, and she posed a question in the manuscript that she left unanswered. She described a drastic situation but the resolution was not fully explained. Irrelevant facts were described, and her info to me in submitting this piece was: "I have cut it down as much as I can." For the market she targeted, it was too long. I easily removed about 200 words, and her (gratifying to me!) approval was, "Now I see what you meant."
I have go over and over my own manuscripts in a weeding process. We all need to do this!!. Until tomorrow, Willma
