Time for Blogging

I've had several indications that my Blogs are reaching beyond the membership of my five workshops and a few close friends.  This is heartening, and though I read some that report on the writer's advantures in life, I keep mine focused on writing  and writing tips I come upon.  I'm confident, however,  that new friendhips are formed when we "reach out and touch" with news and views of all kinds.

Yesterday I received another market listing from a Nevada friend who regularly sends me new markets. One was the Portia Steele Awards contest.  Writers over 50 years of age are asked to submit. My story, "Poetic Justice" has gained kudos from those here who have heard it.  HOWEVER, my word count was 700. The contest's definition of "flash fiction" is 500 words max.  Could I cut my story by 200 words?   I was certain I could–with patience.  I spent about three hours on this, editing and re-editing.  It is amazing how paring words can actually improve our work.

If you'd like to enter an essay, a piece of flash fiction or a poem, check out this contest (deadline April 15) http://portiasteeleaward.org/contest.htm. Prizes: $100. No entry fee.

Happy writing, Willma
