Troublesome Words

As I further re-explore The Write Way,  I've come upon some homophones that have tripped me up from time to time.  For instance: complement and compliment. Complement as a noun or verb expresses completion. A compliment expresses admiration.

Here are a couple more: discreet and discrete.  They have totally different meanings:  Discreet means "prudent;" Discrete means "separate."

Foreword and forward:  Foreword  is the word(s) used before–a brief comment at the beginning.  Forward is the movement  one makes in in walking or marching (or taking the dinner from the stove to the table!).

Here is another I hear often on TV: misuse of  verbs  hone and home.  To home in  is to move  or cause to be moved toward an object or a place.  Hone  means to sharpen..

Podium is frequently used when lectern is meant.  The speaker stands on the podium and puts his notes on the slanted stand that is the lectern

That's enough for today.  Until Monday, Willma
