There's Proof In The Proofing
Many of us remember the caution of parents in our youth: "Act in haste; repent in leisure." I just re-read my blog from yesterday and find a number of dangling pieces of words that I did not "clean up" before I pressed the "publish" key.
That and this morning's workshop in which members delightedly caught me on a mis-use of grammar and syntax, reminds me to remind all that we should all realize that the first edit or proof reading is not the best. All writing should "cool" for a day or two. After an interval of time, the author will inevitably pick up mis-uses and/or better ways of expressing our messages or revealing our characters.
The reason my loyal workshop members are "delighted" to catch me is that I am something of a "bear" when it comes to agreement of subject and verb, the use of lie and lay, and the most egregious: "She gave the book to Mary and I;" these grate in my ears like fingernails on the chalkboard (to repeat an old cliche)!
Check it once, check it twice, and leave it over night before you send it off to seek its fortune.
Until Monday, Willma
