Watching For Printed Goofs

A little monthly publication, SPELL, seeks amusing goofs in newspapers–normally the most frequent sources of failures in proof reading by the publication's copy editor.  I'll locate the address and include it in a future blog.  These are printed on a double page and the sender's name and location included.

For now I'm reminded that of a couple of published headlines and signs that remind us all to be careful with proof reading our own work as well as watching for mistakes in what we read.

A few years ago a headline on the front page of my local paper read: CITY COUNCIL INVITES PUBIC COMMENT.

One of my blog readers quoted a printed sign from a restaurant: OUR PANCAKES WILL WET YOUR PALETTE. Astute readers and homophone watchers will know that WET should be WHET and  that PALATE is a part of the mouth; PALETTE is a paintboard, and a PALLET  is a bed.

Smile a while and watch what you write.  Until tomorrow, Willma
