Greeting Cards–A Few Words for $$
Yesterday I mentioned that I would be attending a program about selling to Greeting card companies. The speaker/teacher Sheryl Tilley's talk on writing for greeting card companies was thorough and very helpful and she offered not only the "how-to" for greeting cards by also how to sell slogans that appear on bumper stickers, T-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. About 1600 companies publish greeting cards and submitting is simple: No cover letter, simply a file card with your name and address on the back; on the front is a couple of words about what the cover art should depict; below it, the words for the greeting. Submit a batch of 12 to 15 at a time. Spend a lot of time studying the card racks at major stores. Many greeting card companies are listed in Writers Market, and most offer their specific submission tips.
The submission format is a part of what she teaches in an on-line class that you can subscribe to for less than $40, make anywhere from $50 to $75 per acceptance. She can be reached at sheryl_tilley@yahoo.com or (928) 899-5064; To subscribe to the Greeting Card Class: http://www.universalclass.com/i/cm/7947.htm
