What's The "Good" if it?
10/26/09– On Saturday I attended an excellent presentation by a very successful novelist. As soon as my copies of her handouts (lent to a fellow writer) returns to me, I'll fill you in.
Meanwhile, here are uses of the word "good." This comes by e-mail from the resource, Daily Writing Tips. Chiefly, "good" is used as an adjective (Have you read any good books lately?) and frequently as a noun: (Political leaders advocate the common good.) It is not correct to use it to modify a verb, as in "the boy did good." And when sombody asks "how are you doing?" it is gramatically incorrect to say "I'm doing good." To be correct, your response should be "I'm doing well."
Even though we playfully say, "You done good," the only place it is reasonably correct to use in our writing is inside quote marks revealing a character's manner of speaking.
